The City of Subiaco was a winner at the recent Irrigation Australia Ltd WA Awards of Excellence, which were presented at a ceremony held at Crown Perth earlier this month.
The city took out the Local Government Improvement and Efficiency Award in recognition of its commitment to sustainable park development and water efficiency.
The city was commended for the way it manages its watering schedules which are determined by local evapotranspiration (ET) data gathered across the city by two weather stations. Evapotranspiration is the movement of water to the air from sources such as soil, plants and waterbodies. By knowing the rate of water loss, the city is able to efficiently manage its watering schedules.
Watering programs also use technology, including fourteen soil moisture sensors to monitor and track moisture levels and determine the effectiveness of irrigation.
Judging criteria for the award included innovative use of materials and technology, water efficiency aspects, environmental responsibility and maintenance and sustainability.
