Take precaution against Ross River virus
Monday 6 January 2014

Residents are warned to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites following the detection of Ross River virus for the first time this season. The city advises:

  • avoiding outdoor exposure at dawn and dusk
  • wearing long, loose-fitting, light coloured clothing when outdoors
  • applying personal repellent containing diethyl toluamide (DEET) or 20 per cent picaridin to exposed skin or clothing.

To help reduce mosquito breeding around the home:

  • dispose of containers that hold water
  • stock ornamental ponds with fish and keep vegetation away from the water’s edge
  • ensure guttering does not hold water
  • empty pot plant drip trays once a week or fill them with sand
  • empty and clean animal and pet drinking water bowls once a week
  • keep swimming pools well chlorinated, filtered and free of dead leaves
  • ensure insect screens are installed and in good condition.
