The City of Subiaco Library recently hosted a special ceremony to announce the winners of the 2014 Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists.
Dignitaries such as city Mayor Heather Henderson, Hon. Bill Marmion MLA and illustrator James Foley were on-hand to present awards to this year's winners, watched on by a crowd filled with award finalists, families and teachers.
A highlight of the night came from the award patron himself, Shaun Tan, who offered sage advice via video message to the young artists in the room. "Real art thrives on mistakes and difficult periods, so it’s important to embrace them rather than fear them."
Mr Tan added; "An exhibition like this at the library reminds us that we are all creative or imaginative in some way, even those who lament ‘I can’t even draw a straight line’ – which surely must be one of the most irrelevant prerequisites for artistic practice – even these people are highly imaginative. I certainly can’t draw a straight line; I use a ruler for that."
In total, there are five award categories, with the top ten pieces from each category featuring in an exhibition at Subiaco Library, 237 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, until Sunday 3 August.
