City of Subiaco Mayor Heather Henderson recently met with students at Holy Cross College in Ellenbrook, to discuss their recent trip to Italy and Spain to commemorate the 200 year anniversary of the birth of Dom Rosendo Salvado.
Mayor Henderson said she was thrilled to hear about the students' travels to Italy and all they had learnt about Dom Salvado.
"The city maintains close links with Subiaco in Italy, as its roots have an Italian connection. In the mid 1800s a group of Benedictine monks including Salvado came to Western Australia. A new monastery was built in Perth and named New Subiaco, which went on to inspire the modern name of the suburb."
She added: "The city is very pleased to be celebrating the bicentenary of Dom Salvado this year and to see these young students so interested in the history of their school is very special."
The city will host a variety of events to celebrate the bicentenary, including an exhibition and talk at Subiaco Library with Benedictine monk Dom Chris, a community bus tour to New Norcia, and a special See Subi on Sunday walk which will visit the site of the original New Subiaco monastery.
