The city of Subiaco won a sustainable transport award recently at the TravelSmart Awards on October 23. The city won the ‘People’s Choice Award’ for the most popular event during Bike Week for the Subiaco Bike to Work Breakfast, as voted by WA Bike Week participants. Bikeweek 2014 saw over 90,000 participants take part in 36 events across WA.
In total, 375 people attended the Bike to Work Breakfast in 2014. Since 2008, attendance has grown by 61%. The event has been effective in encouraging people to switch from driving to work to cycling. In 2014, 29% of participants usually travelled to work by car, and 96% of participants intend to ride to work in the future.
The City of Subiaco was also recognised for sponsoring the Giro de Perth event (with the Town of Vincent) during Bike Week. The Giro’d Perth encourages people to explore quiet suburban backstreets by bike to get to cafes, train stations and parks. The event attracted 520 participants.
